Rated life is the average operating life of a bulb or lamp under certain test conditions. It's important to remember that the actual lifespan of a particular lighting product can vary depending on the surrounding environment, the application and operating conditions. For example, cold temperatures and frequent on/off cycling can affect lighting performance.
Many LED products have a rated life of 50,000 to 100,000 hours — longer than most other lighting technologies. The lumen output of LED fixtures depreciates over time, however. Research has shown that occupants will accept gradual light reductions of up to 30 percent with little notice. Therefore, 70 percent of the initial light level is considered a good threshold for the useful life of LED fixtures.
In addition to long life, LEDs offer a number of important benefits:
- Energy efficiency
- Dimmability and instant on (works well with controls)
- Good cold temperature performance
Despite their many advantages, LEDs may not be the perfect fit for every application and individual product performance can vary. Work with a lighting professional to choose the right lighting for your needs.
